And niño 8-year-old boy died on Tuesday in the American city of Lehi (Utah) after accidentally shooting himself in the head with the gun his mother had kept under the car seat.
The city’s police department announced that the boy died this morning at the hospital, a day after the incident that occurred in the parking lot of a gas station.
According to a statement from Lehi Police, on Monday at 7:39 p.m. (01:39 GMT) officers responded to an emergency call for a minor with a gunshot wound to the head.
The boy was apparently alone in the car while his mother was inside the gas station. A witness told KSL TV that the woman started screaming: “It went off, it went off, it went off. (…) She found the gun under my seat and pulled the trigger. It was a total accident.”
The shooting was “unintentional and self-inflicted,” police said. The boy was flown by helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he died hours later.
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy recently stated that the gun death rate among young Americans is nearly six times higher than in Canada, nearly 23 times higher than in Australia, and nearly 73 times higher than in the United Kingdom.
In fact, in 2020, gunshot wounds surpassed traffic accidents as the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States.
