Does carbonated water offer more health benefits than regular water?

Research shows that when it comes to hydration, plain and sparkling water are equally effective.

The bubbles in carbonated water are created by adding carbon dioxide to filtered water, where the reaction occurs to produce carbonic acid, making carbonated water more acidic than regular water, according to a report by Christian Morrow, associate professor of science and medicine, and Charlotte Phelps, from Bond University.

The acidity can soften tooth enamel, but the researchers say this is not a cause for concern unless the product is mixed with sugar or citrus, which can damage teeth.

However, drinking carbonated water during at-home teeth whitening procedures can discolor your teeth, according to the report.

In most other cases, it would take a large amount of carbonated water passing through the teeth, over a long period of time, to cause any noticeable damage.

There is a misconception that drinking water (of any kind) with a meal is harmful to digestion.

In theory, drinking water can dilute stomach acid (which breaks down food), but in reality it has no negative effect, as the digestive system simply adjusts to the consistency of the meal even with water.

Some people find that carbonated drinks cause some stomach upset. This is due to the buildup of gas, which can cause bloating, cramping and discomfort.

Regarding the water temperature and its effect on the bodyThe report noted some evidence that cold water (at 2 degrees Celsius) may prevent stomach cramps and slow digestion. Ice water may constrict blood vessels and cause uncomfortable cramps.

However, other research suggests that drinking cold water may temporarily boost metabolism, as the body needs to expend energy to warm itself to body temperature. This effect is small and unlikely to lead to significant weight loss.

The bottom line is that water is essential for the body in all its forms, with or without carbonated bubbles, it will always be the healthiest choice for us.
