Colombian Congressmen and anti-Chavez activists deliver letter to the UN on human rights in Venezuela

Bogotá, Sep 3 (EFE).- A group of Colombian congressmen, accompanied by members of the anti-Chavez Venezuelan opposition, delivered this Tuesday to the UN Human Rights Office in Colombia a letter in which they ask you not to recognize the results proclaimed after the elections in Venezuela and to demand that the Venezuelan Government respect human rights.

“From Colombia we are raising our voice for the brotherly people of Venezuela because we are very concerned about the atrocities that are happening with the violation of rights (…) Today we are asking not only the Colombian government but the international community for no more hunger, no more misery, no more systematic violations of human rights and no more deaths in Venezuela,” said Senator Karina Espinosa, of the Liberal Party.

They asked the United Nations “let it not remain silent” and that “it recognizes the victory of Edmundo González as the legitimate president” of Venezuela, as well as “flatly rejects all human rights violations that dictator Maduro is currently committing: kidnappings, murders, mistreatment,” said Senator David Luna of Cambio Radical, one of the promoters of this initiative, to EFE.

The Venezuelan opposition, which brought banners and signs to the doors of the UN office calling for the delivery of the reports and for the violation of human rights to be stopped, said it will continue working with the international community to “limit Maduro’s diplomatic ties,” said Mariluz Palma, head of the campaign command of the Vente Venezuela platform, Colombia chapter.

They also stressed that they are not seeking nor will they accept new elections, as some countries in the region have proposed: “We already had elections in which the entire country spoke out in favor of the freedom of Venezuela,” Palma said.

Regarding the position of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who together with his Mexican and Brazilian counterparts, Andrés López Obrador and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, have attempted to mediate in the crisis – so far without results – Luna said: “Petro does not represent all Colombians on this issue, Colombians are convinced that democracy must be respected.”

Arrest warrant for Urrutia

Venezuela’s Attorney General’s Office on Monday asked a court specializing in “terrorism” crimes to issue an “arrest warrant” against the candidate of the largest opposition coalition, Edmundo González Urrutia, for his “alleged commission of crimes of usurpation of functions” and “forgery of public documents,” in relation to the electoral records of the presidential elections of July 28.

The anti-Chavez activist is also accused of “instigating disobedience of laws,” “conspiracy,” “sabotage to damage systems and association (to commit crimes).”

The investigation into González Urrutia is related to the publication of a website in which the main opposition coalition – the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) – claims to have uploaded “83.5% of the electoral records” collected by witnesses and polling station members on election night to support its claim of fraud in the presidential elections.

The PUD released these records, which the Executive calls “false,” after the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the elections, which has been questioned by numerous countries, some of which support that González Urrutia won by a wide margin.
