The US recalls that it is still looking for Venezuelan businessman Raúl Gorrín for money laundering

Miami, Sep 3 (EFE).- U.S. authorities recalled Tuesday that they are continuing the search for Venezuelan businessman Raúl Gorrín Belisario, accused in the United States of laundering $1 billion and paying $94 million in bribes.

«Raúl Gorrín Belisario remains one of the most wanted fugitives»the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Miami posted on social media X.

The owner and president of Venezuelan broadcaster Globovisión has been accused of paying millions of dollars in bribes to former Venezuelan national treasurers Claudia Patricia Díaz Guillén and Alejandro Andrade Cedeño to obtain the rights to carry out foreign exchange transactions at favorable rates.

In 2023, Díaz Guillén was sentenced to 15 years in prison for money laundering in a case in which Gorrín is the main defendant.

The Venezuelan was charged in August 2017 in the Southern District of Florida with one count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), another of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and nine more counts of money laundering.

The reminder of the search for the fugitive comes a day after US authorities seized the official plane of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

On Monday, President Maduro’s official plane was seized in the Dominican Republic and taken to Florida as part of sanctions imposed on Venezuela by the US government, arguing that it was “illegally purchased” for 13 million dollars.

According to U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, in late 2022 and early 2023, individuals affiliated with Maduro allegedly used a Caribbean-based shell company to conceal their involvement in the illegal purchase of the aircraft from a company based in the Southern District of Florida.
