The Liberian-flagged ship, with a capacity of 17,640 containers, is 366 meters long and 51 meters wide. Transit costs exceeded $1.3 million.
The MSC Marie became “the ship with the largest cargo capacity ever to cross the transoceanic waterway,” the Panama Canal Authority said in a press release, clarifying that the previous record was held last year by the Ever Max, with a capacity of 17,312 containers.
The 82 km long Panama Canal was opened by the US on August 15, 1914. Since then, more than 1.2 million ships have used it. In 2016 it was widened to allow the passage of larger ships.
Through the Panama Canal, ships pass from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea in about eight hours, without having to round Cape Horn.
