Social media post about Gaza: Algerian footballer on trial in France

Algerian international footballer Attal has been on trial in France on Monday for spreading hatred. He had shared a video of a Palestinian preacher on social media in which he apparently Israel was threatened with a ‘black day’.

Attal immediately issued an apology deleting the video while he was suspended by his club. However, prosecutors investigated the incident on suspicion of ‘terrorist justification’.

But they dropped that investigation after watching the video and questioning the player and instead charged him with ‘inciting religious hatred’.

Two associations, the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism (Lecra) and the Jewish Observatory of France, have taken civil action against the player.

If found guilty, Attal can be sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.

Atal is currently under judicial supervision and is banned from playing professional football, as well as traveling abroad.

Following the post, his club immediately suspended him ‘indefinitely’ while the Professional Football League banned him for seven matches.

Some of Atal’s teammates in the Algerian team called on him to show leniency, saying he had apologized and had not watched the video to the end before posting it.
