Algeria calls for emergency Security Council meeting on Palestine

“This meeting, which is expected to be scheduled (held and called for) by the Slovenian presidency of the Security Council before the end of the week, comes amid the ongoing fierce security campaign against the West Bank, which has claimed the lives of nearly 700 civilians, including more than 150 children, since last October, and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to infrastructure, as the Israeli army persists in its crimes against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, raising the death toll to nearly 41,000.”

Algeria’s invitation came in coordination with the Palestinian mission to the United Nations in New York.

This meeting is expected to allow the Security Council members to “affirm their support for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, renew their commitment to the principle of the two-state solution as the only way to achieve lasting and just peace in the Middle East, and oppose the approach of the Zionist occupation authorities aimed at undermining any hope for establishing a Palestinian state and denying the historical rights of the Palestinian people.”

The Israeli army and the General Security Service (Shabak) announced in a joint statement last Wednesday (August 28) the launch of a military operation to “fight terrorism” in the cities of Jenin and Tulkarm in the West Bank.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that there have been casualties since the start of the Israeli military operation in the West Bank, with the following casualties concentrated: 18 killed in Jenin Governorate, 4 killed in Tubas Governorate, 4 killed in Tulkarm Governorate, and 3 killed in Hebron Governorate.
