One in three homeless people suffer from mental health issues

In Belgium, one in three homeless people suffers from mental health problems. this is a conclusion New research by the King Baudouin Foundation, the Catholic University of Leuven and the University of Leuven.

The study, initiated by the King Baudouin Foundation, is based on multiple statistical data from 227 Flemish and Walloon municipalities over a four-year period (2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023). Not only does it highlight the issue of homelessness, but most importantly, it places the issue of mental health and its impact on this vulnerable group at the heart of the subject.

Between 2020 and 2023, 23,226 people were homeless or homeless. Among them, 17,018 are adults and 6,208 are children. A remarkable 30.1% of homeless adults suffer from mental health issues. Another interesting percentage: To cite these examples, 28.8% of people have an addiction problem, in other words dependence. Sometimes homeless people suffer from both mental health and addiction issues. In this case, their share is 14.4%.

But note that one in three adults does not experience any of these problems.
