Brazil’s worst fire in 14 years: Amazon fires raging

Brazil is experiencing its worst forest and bush fires in 14 years. A total of 68,635 fires broke out in the South American country in August, according to the Institute for Space Research (INPE), which is responsible for satellite monitoring. This is the highest August value since 2010. June to October is Brazil’s forest fire season.

Trees are typically cut down and then the cleared forest areas are set on fire to create new pasture and farmland for growing soybeans. The Amazon rainforest is also important to the global climate because it absorbs large amounts of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. This year’s severe drought has also made the situation worse. Experts say this is caused by climate change and the El Niño weather phenomenon.
