Uruguay star forward Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from the national team. The veteran told a news conference in Montevideo that he will play his final game for Celeste next Friday in a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay. “I gave everything for the national team,” he said through tears. “But I am already 37 years old and there is still a long way to go before the next World Cup.”
Suarez is the Uruguay national team’s top scorer with 69 goals and is considered one of the best strikers of this generation. However, he has come under scrutiny for unsportsmanlike conduct multiple times during his career. During the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he was banned for nine international games after he bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, which went viral around the world.
Suarez has played for teams such as Ajax Amsterdam, Liverpool FC and Barcelona FC. He is currently signed with Inter Miami. There he played alongside Argentinian star forward Lionel Messi, with whom he also became close personal friends.
