The Vice-Minister presented Lithuania’s work in strengthening cyber security to the United States

“Lithuania has confirmed its commitment to the fight against cybercriminals at the international level,” said Deputy Minister of National Defense Greta Monika Tučkutė in a statement from the Ministry of National Defense (KAM) about the visit.

She participated in a high-level meeting organized by the US White House to unite the efforts of 50 countries and international organizations in the fight against ransomware cyber attacks (Counter Ransomware Initiative, CRI).

As announced in the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lithuania is one of the leaders of this initiative, leading the information sharing working group.

At the meeting, the Vice-Minister presented the work done by Lithuania – the information exchange platform, which has been implemented by the Regional Cyber Defense Center (RKGC) in Kaunas for a year.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, important work has been done in recent years to make this solution proposed by Lithuania useful for like-minded countries of the CRI initiative – in cooperation with the Belgian Cyber Security Center, Lithuania has started conducting introductory information sharing training.

“We say that cybercriminals have no borders, but the joint work of 50 countries is special in that we also have no barriers when working together. We aim for different regions – from the Baltic Sea to the Asia-Pacific Ocean – to be able to share information about the threats that are relevant in their countries,” GMTučkutė said.

“Together with Belgium, we promise to hold additional thematic training for allies in 2024 – we aim to attract more countries that can use our platform, deepen knowledge and increase mutual trust,” she asserted.

During her visit to the USA, the Vice Minister also communicated with the country’s highest-ranking cyber security officials and shared Lithuania’s experience in strengthening resistance to cyber threats.

After meeting with Mieke Eoyang, Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Defense for Cyber Security, the Deputy Minister discussed the situation of cyber security threats in the Baltic Sea region, support to Ukraine, US participation in RKGC activities, cooperation with the Asia-Pacific region, and further support for the development of the military’s cyber defense unit.

“Lithuania’s experience – not only in countering cyber threats from Russia and China, but also in order to share lessons learned with partners – is relevant for partners in the Transatlantic and Asia-Pacific regions. “Consultations with the US in the field of cyber security help Lithuania deepen its knowledge and skills by strengthening its national cyber capabilities,” said GMTučkutė.
