They want us to work longer. Their own pension is a joke

You know, the kind of people who would rather talk than act.

As a politician in Christiansborg, you would very much like to avoid such a characteristic. Here it is about appearing strong-willed and energetic. As someone who is both able to identify significant issues and do something about them.

The people’s front fighter. Democracy’s world changer for the better.

In that light, it is thought-provoking how the political leaders deftly avoid a current and relevant issue that otherwise seems relatively easy to fix.

Because while the politicians these days are in a hurry to talk about the Danes’ retirement age, they are very little in a hurry to talk about their own golden pension conditions.

Here, the will to act is unmistakably foot-dragging.

For half a decade, the Social Democrats and the Left have promised to change the politicians’ own salary and pension conditions, which differ markedly from those enjoyed by the rest of the population.

But nothing has happened.

As it is today, a politician who has served 20 years in Parliament can collect a pension of DKK 35,000. Every month. The rest of life.

If you have been a minister for eight years, another good layer is added on top. This means that politicians such as Mette Frederiksen, Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Troels Lund Poulsen will receive DKK 58,100 in monthly lifelong pensions on the day they leave the labor market.

It seems to be enough to get by.

Add to that lucrative maternity benefits and a tax-free monthly allowance, and you have a total package that is in no way consistent with the surrounding labor market.

The fact that politicians at Christiansborg have certain conditions that differ from ordinary wage earners can be well defended. But here the differences are so clear that one wonders.

On the other hand, no one is surprised that the politicians are very busy letting the fat golden calf live on behind the scenes. It’s never fun to have to compromise your own privileges. It is easier to belittle others.

The problem is that the politicians’ pension conditions from another planet make it ring hollow when they are busy explaining and defending to all the rest of us why we have to work harder and longer.

Because what is the point of listening to a priest who does not follow his own sermon?

Talking and talking while the ass walks is the stuff politicians are made of.
