Bollywood Renowned director Lawrence D’Souza has revealed that he and a producer friend of his in 1989. Salman Khan After watching his first film ‘Maine Pyaar Kya’, he was signed for his film for a mere five thousand Indian rupees.
In an interview with film magazine ‘Friday Talkies’, D’Souza reminisced about Salman Khan’s early days in the film industry and how producer S Ramnathan signed him for Rs 5,000. ‘However, the film he intended to make never materialised.’
As Salman’s fame grew, his fees increased. D’Souza recalls the time when Salman himself questioned why the producers were offering him such a huge amount without working with him.
D’Souza added: ‘We went to Rajshree for the trial of ‘Maine Pyaar Kya’. After watching the film, S. Ramnathan, with whom I was working in a film called Pratiksha, asked me Lawrence to sign Salman.
‘So I called Salman to his office and we offered him five thousand rupees for our project.’
He added: ‘Unfortunately S Ramnathan Salman failed to start the film after paying the signing amount.’
D’Souza revealed that Ramanathan later paid Salman five lakh rupees for another project but that film also did not go on floors.
The director of Saajan film further said that Salman Khan gave hit films one after the other after which in one of our meetings Salman complained to Ramnathan that he signs him but does not work.
D’Souza also talked about his 1991 hit Saajan.
Salman and Raveena’s film ‘Pathar Ke Phool’ was released in 1991 (Spee Films).
Talking about the super hit film starring Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Sanjay Dutt, D’Souza revealed that he was paid Rs. And Sanjay was paid Rs.12 lakhs.
D’Souza said that the film industry in the 1980s and 1990s was not as profitable as it is today.
Recalling an advice he got from Salman, D’Souza said: ‘I used to do films to help my producer friends, some of them were poor, so I wanted to help them, but Salman once asked me to help him. He said that you should not do this now. Since you have given a superhit film like Saajan, you should do better than that.’
D’Souza admits his passionate nature and desire to help others has forced him to make sacrifices in his career and sometimes lose his earnings.
