“4 axes” – a fourfold look at the sculpture | Culture

Famous Lithuanian sculptors of different generations – Vladas Urbanavičius, Rimantas Milkintas, Rafal Piesliak and Dainius Trumpis – introduce the diversity of possibilities of contemporary sculpture using different techniques and new ways of expression. The exhibition will be open until November 10.

The work of all authors covers a wide field of topics: from the socio-cultural, political context of today to universal existential themes and formal aspects related to the problems of the construction of the form and volumes of the work.

Living classic Vladas Urbanavičius presents abstract sculptures, (ex)testing the limits of size and construction possibilities. The old industrial steel used for the works gives it uniqueness and often inspires completely non-technical, conceptual structures. They show the sculptor’s characteristic attention to the materials used, a delicate sense of form and a plastic hearing.

In his conceptual sculptures, Rimantas Milkintas conveys the current affairs of society, constant changes, tension, anxiety and other experienced emotions. By deforming seemingly invulnerable materials, creating new significant structures, the artist analyzes not only technological possibilities, but also universal societal problems.

Rafal Piesliak combines various collected objects, changing their function and giving them a different meaning. The created forms help to re-experience the objects that emerged from the past and the associated contexts of collective memory. By experimenting, he combines light sources with different materials and forms, thereby highlighting their material properties and changing the atmosphere of the space itself.

Dainias Trumpis’ works were inspired by personal experience and reflections on cultural memory. The author is interested in both physical and psychological reactions to form and material properties. Connecting ready-made and industrial materials, shiny galvanized metal, the artist extracts new metaphysical values. Sculptures, high-reliefs, installations, due to their unexpected and extremely aesthetically sensitive solutions, enchant and involve the viewer in the world of the exhibition they create.
