Post-surgery commitments

It all started when James was 14 years old. He had to undergo surgery to remove a lung and survived thanks to a blood transfusion. Picture this…at an age when most of us are thinking about the little things in our daily lives, James decided to give back what he had been given. He promised himself that he would become a blood donor as soon as possible.

The beginning of life’s mission

At 18, James fulfilled his promise and became a blood donor for the Red Cross. And he wasn’t satisfied with just a small donation. No, this incredible man has been donating blood for 67 consecutive years and has donated blood more than 1,100 times. Can you imagine? 1,100 times he sat in that chair, reached out, gave a part of himself to save lives. It is both moving and inspiring.

special blood

What makes James’ story even more extraordinary is that he has a very rare blood type, D-negative. Not only is this blood compatible with all blood types, but it is also critical in treating rhesus disease, a disease that is dangerous to unborn babies. With this special gift, James was able to save more than 2.4 million lives, mostly newborns.

The man with the golden arm

Now that James has reached the age limit for donating blood, he has to withdraw from this life mission. But his impact was so great that the Red Cross counted the number of lives he saved and honored him for his dedication. James was as humble as ever, saying it was just “something he could do.” That may be true, but he did what few could do.
