It’s a creative rarity, a collection of every genre ever created, because at the end of the day, music is one of them. That’s what Rafo Grin’s new album Other Ways is about (among many others, for it’s not named for nothing).
“For several years I have been seeking a purpose artistically, to synthesize in my music and albums all the musical influences that I have devoted to my musical path over the years, the music that continues to move and nourish me, and the ideas that arise from my songs,” this the Neuquén guitarist said of his album.
Raffo was a restless man: he was a member of The Jackpots, Los Mortales Pasajeros or Los Infernales, among many other groups. Last year, he celebrated his thirtieth anniversary with music in El Alimadero, and imagine a packed house. He is also the coordinator of the Neuquen Blues Ensemble, which is approaching its fourth year in history.

Saying “Rafo Grin” always immediately becomes synonymous with the blues. Mixing styles, genres of music such as funk. Passionate, team-builder, generous, “everyone seems to like” someone, the protagonist of any bar with music.
In conversation Diary of Rio NegroWe’ve said a lot, but not everything, about the virtuoso about the creative process behind his fourth and, for now, only solo album, “Other Forms,” which was released on Sunday, August 4 .
“It has six of my own songs, which is my first solo album without anyone else’s music, five songs with music and lyrics, and one instrumental,” Raffo said. “I call it my most eclectic album because it kind of describes this new phase I’m going through, now six years in, where my music has changed and been nourished by other popular music. , like folk rock, pop rock, Montevideo music, candombebeat, murgacanto, milongón, it also reminds me of the styles of my childhood: blues, rock and pop aesthetics, as you will see, stylistically. Say, it’s very diverse.
Raffo, Wilson and Abby, The trio shaped six songs on “Other Forms.”
The album is based on the trio that Raffo formed in 2022, with Wilson Mazza on keyboards and vocals, Abi on vocals, and Raffo himself on guitar and vocals. In the studio, the trio expanded into a quintet, with Lucio Jara on drums and Julian Beccaria on bass. Other Forms also features two Alex Reed musicians: Loto Rock, who lives in Mexico and is Rafo’s brother; and Gabriel Cuozzo from Cipolletti.
The album, co-produced by Wilson and Rafo, was recorded in Cipolletti’s Studio 883 in July, August and December 2023 and the first half of 2024; at Studio Ofiuco, engineered by Wilson Maza; in La In Fu’s home studio, the title of “do your best” is not called for nothing. Mixed by Lucio Jarta of Limay Récords and mastered by Carlos Richter in the distant province of Corrientes.
“This is my most eclectic album because my music is nourished by other popular music, such as folk rock, pop rock, Montevideo music, candombebeat, murga canto.”

Q: What was the creation process of this album like?
reply: After playing with this trio in 2022, Wilson suggested in 2023 that I stop playing live and capture all the music that was born within me and in my solitude. Several of these songs were born as early as 2021.
Both Abbey and Wilson brought musical leaps and tremendous growth to the song. The process began in May 2023 and the recording was completed in May 2024 of this year.
Q: Where did these songs come from?
reply: Most of the songs emerged in late 2021, emerging from the pandemic, and reflect some personal stories between late 2019 and the first phase of the pandemic.
Many pieces were born as sketches, ideas, and then in 2023, I decided to put together a project to start playing this music. In fact, I put the band together, this trio, for the release of my last album in 2020, “Hijo de un hombre sin corazón”, but we have already started preparing songs for this new album.
I visited with Wilson and Aby, and we co-wrote five of the six songs on Other Shapes. The sixth song is the only instrumental song and I say that it was excluded from Sustentable from the time I worked with my band Mortales Pasajeros from 2013 to 2018. Outside Sustentable.
Rafo Grin’s previous albums are How to Survive in a Toxic World (2015), Sustentable (2018) and Son of a Man Without Skin (2020).
