Legalization of marijuana has support in large parts of the United States. Three quarters of the country’s population live in states where marijuana is legal for either medical use or both medical and recreational use.
Support is particularly strong among younger Americans, a group of voters who have moved significantly in the direction of Trump’s rival Kamala Harris since she became the Democratic presidential nominee.
Voters in Florida will vote on the proposal in connection with the presidential election in November. Gov. Ron DeSantis and several other local Republicans are opposed.
“The proposed amendment will turn Florida into San Francisco or Chicago,” DeSantis said this summer. He added that the state already allows medical use and said “we have to keep our streets clean.”
Trump says that one should not be considered a criminal in one state when marijuana is legal in others.
“We don’t need to destroy lives and waste taxpayers’ money arresting adults with personal use amounts on them, and no one should have to mourn the loss of someone close to them because they died after using marijuana laced with fentanyl,” said Trump.
