Zelenskyj puts pressure on the US – wants to attack targets further into Russia

It happens after the countries’ defense ministers met in Washington on Saturday.

The United States has given Ukraine more than $50 billion in military aid since 2022, but the Americans have limited the use of the donated weapons to Ukrainian soil and to defensive operations in the border areas.

Attack in Kharkiv

Six people were killed and 97 wounded in a Russian bomb attack on Kharkiv on Friday, according to Zelenskyj, and there were new attacks on Saturday.

These can only be stopped by “attacking Russian military airports, their bases and the Russian terrorist logistics”, Zelenskyy said in his daily video address on Saturday.

– We talk about this every day with our partners. We persuade and present the arguments, Zelenskyj said. The president said that preventing Russian bombs from reaching Ukrainian soil would be a “strong step towards forcing Russia to work for an end to the war and a just peace”.

He then addressed the US, UK, France and Germany, saying that the Ukrainians “need the capabilities to truly and fully protect Ukraine and Ukrainians”.

Meetings in Washington

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov told CNN after the meeting with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin that he had shown them which Russian airfields are within range of the longer strikes, if the Ukrainians are given permission.

Zelensky’s chief of staff Andrij Jermak sent a letter to Umerov Austin on the situation on the battlefield, according to Zelensky’s office.

The meetings took place at the end of a week in which, according to the Ukrainians, Russia has attacked the country with more than 400 rockets and drones.

It is important for Ukraine to now get the weapons promised to them in previous support packages, as quickly as possible, says Jermak, according to the president’s office.
