The Greek port city of Volos has declared a state of emergency due to large numbers of dead fish in the waters. The month-long measure aims to provide government support for cleaning up the coast and rivers around the city, ANA news agency reported on Saturday.
The environmental disaster was caused by flooding caused by heavy rains in the Thessaly region last year. Lakes that dried up decades ago are now filled with water, flooding large areas. Since then, the water level in the lake has dropped dramatically, and the freshwater fish living there flow through the river to Volos and eventually into Pagaxitic Bay, where they die in the salt water.
On Tuesday alone, crews collected 57 tons of dead fish from beaches around Volos, and cleanup work continued on Saturday. Special nets were installed at the mouth of the Siriya River to collect large numbers of dead fish.
