Defending champion Novak Djokovic made a surprise move into the third round of a Grand Slam tournament in New York on Friday. The second-seeded Serbian had to lose to Australian Alexei Popyrin 4:6 4:6 6:2 4:6 after 3 minutes and 19 seconds.
“It was a bad game for me,” Djokovic said after the game. “I played the worst tennis I’ve ever played, serving worse than ever.” Djokovic still has to wait for his 25th Grand Slam title this year; at 37, he hasn’t won any. Four major tournaments.
The 28th seed Popyrin once again showed his strong performance on hard courts and showed some exciting tennis at times. He jubilantly celebrated spectacular scoring wins and thrilled the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd on multiple occasions. In preparation, Popyrin won the Montreal Masters 1000 event and is now in the last 16 of a major for the first time in his career.
