Williams saves Logan Sargeant in favor of Franco Colapinto

Williams announced on Tuesday that it has dismissed American driver Logan Sargeant with immediate effect. He will be replaced by Argentinian Franco Colapinto until the end of the F1 season.

Williams announced on Tuesday that it had dismissed, with immediate effect, American driver Logan Sargeant, who has not been convincing at the wheel of the British single-seater, and who will be replaced by Argentinian Franco Colapinto until the end of the F1 season.

“Replacing a driver mid-season is not a decision we take lightly, but we believe it gives Williams the best chance of fighting for points until the end of the championship.”team boss James Vowles said in a statement. “We have just made a major upgrade to the car and we need to maximise every opportunity to score points in a particularly tight midfield battle”he argued again. Aged 23, Sargeant was coming off a disappointing first season, marked by several accidents and no points scored. He had not shown signs of improvement since the start of the current one, as evidenced by his impressive off-track crash last week during free practice for the Dutch GP.

His replacement, Colapinto, who comes from the British team’s young driver academy, has been racing in F2 until now, where he was in 6th place in the standings, dominated by Frenchman Isack Hadjar. He already had a taste of F1 at the beginning of July, by taking part in the first test session at Silverstone. The 21-year-old Argentinian will therefore form a duo from this weekend at the Italian GP in Monza, and until the end of the championship, with Thai driver Alexander Albon.

Williams is currently 9th in the constructors’ standings, with only 4 points collected by Albon. For next season, ambitions will be on the rise since Williams has recruited Spaniard Carlos Sainz, ousted from Ferrari in favor of six-time British world champion Lewis Hamilton.
