“Stop flirting with anarchists”: Manny Assig vs. Idan Amadi

The public arena in Israel is noisy and crowded around the memorial ceremony for October 7, and now Manny Essig is sharply attacking Idan Amadi, against the background of his proposal to Sara Miri Regev regarding the format of the ceremony.

Amadi’s proposal, which included the appointment of three bereaved women to produce the ceremony and the removal of Minister Regev from the process, met with strong opposition from the screenwriter and comedian Manny Essig. In a post Essig published, he attacked my position: “It seems that the sympathy and warm embrace you received from all of us confused you a little. With all due respect, you are not an elected official. You are not the president of the country and do not hold a public or state office, so your compromise proposals seem pathetic and ridiculous.”

“There are prices for taking a stand,” Essig wrote, and even went so far as to call on the singer to “stop flirting with alternative anarchists who don’t count the people.”

As I recall, Amadi’s proposal includes a diverse list of speakers, including the commander of the Israeli Navy, Brigadier General Israel Shumer, a fighter from Kfar Gaza, and the former abductee Amit Sosna – choices that reflect an attempt to represent a variety of voices and experiences from the national trauma.
