Iran denies allegations of assault and murder of teenage protester

Today (2/3) the Iranian judiciary rejected information published by the British television network BBC, according to which a young protester was sexually assaulted and murdered by members of the Revolutionary Guards during the 2022 protest movement.

The movement in question, which shook Iran for many months, was sparked by the death, on September 16, 2022, of a young Iranian-Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, who died at the age of 22 after being arrested by the moral police, who accused of violating the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code.

It is recalled that on September 20, Nika Sakrami, aged 16, disappeared, after participating in one of the demonstrations in Tehran. Her body was found a week later.

At the time Iranian authorities claimed she had committed suicide by jumping from a building, denying any connection between her death and the protests.

But the BBC reported this week that the teenage girl had been sexually assaulted and murdered after being arrested by members of the Revolutionary Guards.

“BBC World’s supposed investigative report on Nika Sakrami showed that this media (…) is not a media committed to truth and reality,” the Iranian justice outlet Mizan Online said today.

The investigation shows that the BBC “did not and does not show attention to the most fundamental principle of factual reporting, namely the ability to verify and corroborate sources and documents”, it added.

The Iranian justice report, which includes photographs and documents obtained from Tehran’s coroner’s office, rejects, among other things, accusations of insanity and insists that the teenager committed suicide.

Hundreds of people have been killed, including dozens of members of the security forces, and thousands more arrested during the 2022 challenge movement.

The authorities spoke of “riots” incited by Israel, a sworn enemy of Iran and Western countries.

Nine men were executed in Iran in cases linked to the protests, mostly accused of killing and other violence against security forces.
