This method will allow passengers to purchase and activate tickets easily and simply by touching the composter screen with a bank card or smart device.

The ticket will be activated automatically, and to check how long it is still valid, passengers can do it by touching the same contactless payment card or smart device to the composter again.

“We are moving rapidly towards the modernization of public transport in the city of Vilnius and greater convenience for residents. New trolleybuses are already on the streets, and today we are introducing contactless payment, a new opportunity to travel more easily and comfortably, meeting the needs of today’s residents. This decision will not only shorten the time spent purchasing a ticket, but will also contribute to the sustainable development of the city by promoting the integration of technology in everyday life,” says Valdas Benkunskas, the mayor of the capital.

“The new way of purchasing a ticket will be particularly convenient for tourists, city guests and our citizens. We have already received requests for this method of payment many times – when you do not need to communicate with the driver or know the local system for purchasing tickets. You just get in, touch the card and drive,” says Loreta Levulytė-Staškevičienė, JUDU’s head of public transport organization, acting director. “Vilnius, together with the largest cities in the world and Europe – New York, Sydney, Tokyo, London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Prague – is implementing the latest technologies for public transport trips. We hope that the residents of the capital will also positively evaluate this advanced decision.”

How to buy a ticket contactless?

All passengers need to do is touch the contactless card or smart device to the composter once. The successful purchase of the ticket will be represented by the display of the composter and the sound signal. Only one ticket can be purchased with one card at a time. If the validity period of the ticket has already expired, by touching the card again, a new ticket is purchased, which will be valid for 60 minutes. With a valid ticket, passengers can continue their journey with another public transport. By touching the composter screen in another bus or trolleybus, the passenger will see the ticket’s validity period.

To purchase a short-term public transport ticket, passengers will be able to use the following contactless cards: Mastercard, Maestro, Visa, VisaElectron.

It’s not recommended to stick your entire wallet or card case to the composter, as this can drain money from another card. To avoid these problems, it is best to take out only one card that you want to pay with.

It will also be possible to purchase a ticket with Google Pay or Apple Pay accounts. In this case, you should simply touch smart devices, such as a phone or a watch, to the composter. It is important to note that contactless payment is enabled on the device.

Temporarily, until the end of September, during ticket control, controllers may ask to provide the last 4 numbers of the bank card used to purchase the ticket. This practice of contactless ticket checking is also used in foreign countries, for example in the city of Birmingham in England. In this way, it will be checked whether the ticket is valid. If the passenger has paid with a smart device, he will find these numbers in his Google Pay or Apple Pay accounts.

Later, during the check-in, passengers will simply hold their payment card or the medium they used to purchase the ticket to the control device. The controller will use special equipment to check whether a public transport ticket is assigned to a payment card, smartphone, watch or other device.
