The Kremlin said today that it considers the June conference in Switzerland, to which Russia has not been invited, to find a solution to end the war in Ukraine pointless.
The Swiss government announced that “at this stage” of the talks, Russia is not among the states that have been invited. Pointing out that it had always been open to Russia’s invitation, he underlined that Moscow had repeatedly signaled that it was not interested in participating. Switzerland announced in January that it would host a peace summit at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov questioned the credibility of the initiative. “What kind of conference can we talk about, with serious expectations of some kind of results, without the participation of Russia?” he told reporters. “This is absolutely impossible and it is clear that this is an initiative that does not aim for results,” he added.
“Switzerland is convinced that Russia should be involved in this process,” the Swiss government said in a statement. “A peace process without Russia is not possible,” he adds.
In a video message, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said invitations had been sent for the summit, which he described as “the first real opportunity to start restoring a just peace.” He claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin would attempt to disrupt the participants’ efforts with attempts at “manipulation” and with “strong blows from his terrorists”.
Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, told Ukrainian television that Kiev was making every effort to get China to participate in the Switzerland conference. “China is very important and consultations are ongoing at various levels with the participation of our partners,” he said.
The invited delegations include members of the G7, G20 and BRICS, the EU, international organizations and two religious representatives, the Swiss government said. He emphasized that its purpose is to create a framework for achieving sustainable peace in Ukraine, as well as a road map for Russia’s participation in the peace process.
