Egypt announces new gas discovery in Western Desert

Egypt – The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced, yesterday, Tuesday, a new gas discovery in the Western Desert, with an average daily production of 23 million cubic feet.

The ministry said in a statement that Khalda Petroleum Company, acting on behalf of the American company Apache and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, announced the discovery in the West Pheops-1 area in the Kalabsha Development Area in the Western Desert.

She explained that the company successfully tested the well by drilling 270 feet into the sand, resulting in the extraction of 7,165 barrels of oil per day and 23 million cubic feet of associated gas.

Earlier today, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced a global bid to explore for oil and gas in the country, as part of a plan to boost local production starting in 2025.

In a statement, the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, announced the launch of a new bid to search for natural gas in 12 areas in the Mediterranean and the Nile Delta.

Egypt is seeking to boost local production, to reduce the import bill on the one hand, and to meet the needs of the local market, especially for natural gas to generate electricity, on the other hand.

Egypt is a producer of natural gas, and in 2017 it achieved self-sufficiency and exported abroad, before production gradually declined starting in 2021, resulting in the opening of new exploration areas to companies.
