Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo has died at the age of 27, days after collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match in Brazil. His club Nacional quoted doctors treating him in Sao Paulo as saying the cause of death was cardiovascular arrest. Izquierdo died Tuesday night local time, according to a hospital statement.
The centre-back staggered off the pitch in the 84th minute of Thursday’s last-16 second-leg tie with Sao Paulo FC, fell and was taken off the field unconscious. According to the hospital, the diagnosis was arrhythmia.
