CHICAGO (EFE).— Former U.S. President Barack Obama last night outlined a possible victory for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the November elections.
Speaking on the second day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, he said the country is ready “for a new chapter.”
“We don’t need four more years of bluster and chaos. We’ve seen that movie before and we know the aftermath is usually worse. America is ready for a new chapter. America is ready for a better story. We’re ready for a President Kamala Harris,” the former president said to cheers.
Obama, the first black president in U.S. history, returned to the convention stage 20 years after his first appearance, a 2004 performance in Boston that propelled him into the national spotlight before he successfully ran for president.
“History will remember Joe Biden as a president who stood up for democracy in a time of great peril,” Obama said yesterday as the crowd chanted: “Thank you, Joe.”
Speaking earlier was his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, who said there was something “wonderfully magical in the air,” not just in the stadium but across the country, a “sense of family that had been buried for too long.”
“You know what I’m talking about, right? It’s the anticipation, the energy, the excitement of being on the brink of a brighter day again,” Michelle said, then shouted out to a standing ovation from the crowd: “America, the hope is back!”
The former first lady lashed out at the “limited and narrow” worldview — alluding to Donald Trump — saying that he felt threatened by the presence of an African-American family in the White House and that in this campaign he has returned to the same “ugly, misogynistic and racist lies.”
Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, also spoke, describing his wife as “a joyful warrior” and “tough on her feet,” as did Kamala herself, who said: “Together we will chart a new path forward.”
