It is within the framework of its national awareness and information campaign that Conacce Chaplains Global Corporation, through its anti-drug department, offered free training to security and defense forces on first aid. It was in the premises of the provincial directorate of social affairs of Ogooué-Maritime, located in the 3e Port-Gentil district, particularly in the so-called twenty-five housing area, that the police officers, gendarmes and their colleagues from the army have all been taught about good practices to adopt in the event of danger. The objective is to be able to succeed in saving lives in the exercise of their function.
“We train law enforcement because of the dangerous nature of the work they do. They need to be trained to help their colleagues in case of danger. In the next step, we will approach the administrations,” explained Colonel Lambert Edowiza, national anti-drug commander, also Africa director in charge of the drug problem within Conacce Chaplains.
Law enforcement and security officers have been educated at length on the signs that can determine a certain abnormality in the human body during a malaise. Check the victim’s state of consciousness, breathing for an unconscious person, place the latter in the lateral safety position, apply chest compressions as well as insufflations by using an automated external defibrillator if necessary.
“Our brothers in the corps go to the field very often, and leave with bullets that can be avoided. Many people die out of ignorance, that’s why I would continue to set up such training. Even our children must be trained, because they can save a relative in the house.”said Chaplain Lieutenant Célia Lawson, promoter of the event.
“If we have a soldier who is choking due to a total obstruction, we must give five slaps between the shoulder blades to create a cough reflex and the foreign body can come out.”explains the project director, aspiring chaplain Lézin Amalet.
“If nothing comes out, we will compress the victim’s abdomen to create a piston effect. And with a sure gesture, we will direct the compressed air in the lungs towards the trench to unblock the airways,” he specifies.
These gestures can be practiced during accidents in everyday life or exceptional situations such as the tragic events of March 9, 2023, which saw the Esther miracle boat swallowed by Gabonese waters. This training does not result in the issuance of a diploma but rather participants will receive the certificates issued by the trainer for a period of 3 years. At the end of this period, participants will have the opportunity to do a refresher course.
