Risk of queues, thousands of participants – and 110 tonnes of sand. This is how large events leave their mark on the city

That’s how it sounded from many of them, it was going to Hobrovej for three evenings with the DHL Relay at the Dyrskuepladsen in Aalborg.

– We are fully aware that it was an issue last year, that it took a long time to arrive. But this year the problems should be solved so that the traffic flows better, says event employee Rasmus Schøn, who is the rope holder at the organizer Aalborg Atletik og Motion.

– But we probably cannot avoid queues to some extent.

Goodbye to road work

There are two things that make him calmer around the traffic this year, which also affects other motorists.

– First of all, there is no longer road work on Hobrovej. Last year there was only one track in each direction to the event area, this time two tracks are open each way. That should take some of the pressure off, he says.

– In relation to finding alternative routes, we are influenced by the fact that there are many residential roads in the area, so it does not solve anything if many drive there instead.

However, Rasmus Schøn points to Nibevej and Letvadvej as possible back roads to Aalborg Storcenter in City Syd, where an agreement has been made for free parking.

– My best advice is to arrive in good time, before the relay starts at 6pm and the walk half an hour later.

More buses deployed

He also encourages people to use public transport.

Because there are many people who have to go back and forth in the area on the three evenings the relay takes place. 6,000 participants are expected to lace up their running shoes this evening, Tuesday, and that number will rise to 7000 and 8000 for the next two days.

– We have made a special agreement with Nordjyllands Trafikselskab about extra buses to and from the event area, says Rasmus Schøn.

Specifically, it is about NT putting more buses on routes 1 and 16 in the period around the DHL Relay.

110 ton sand

And he is also pleased that Dyrskuepladsen is now ready for the relay and walk.

This year, the routes for relay and walk separately for the majority of the trip.

Because there were major challenges during the weekend, when the wind first destroyed several tents, and the rain subsequently flooded parts of the site.

– But together we managed to procure and erect new tents on Saturday, and the site has been drained.

However, there is something that runners and walkers should be aware of. Because in collaboration with Aalborg Municipality, 110 tonnes of washed sand has arrived at Dyrskuepladsen.

– This Tuesday morning, three mini loaders are busy putting sand on the routes, because the paths have become rock hard. So we have chosen to put sand on it so that the runners don’t get hurt, says Rasmus Schøn.

– It is the best solution, and we hope people will accept it. It’s not like running on a sandy beach, but it gets a little tougher. And after all, it’s better than someone getting hurt.
