This was confirmed by the Lower Austria State Police Directorate upon request, following a report from the daily newspaper “Heute” on Monday. The Turkish citizens, who shared a room in the accommodation, had apparently got into an argument late on Saturday evening, whereupon one of the men pulled out a knife. The injured man was taken to St. Pölten University Hospital, and the accused was taken to the prison in the state capital on suspicion of grievous bodily harm by order of the public prosecutor’s office.
“Restore law and order”
The knife attack shows that the tightening of Lower Austria’s basic welfare law was “a simple necessity,” said Deputy Governor Udo Landbauer (FPÖ) in a press release. If asylum seekers are found with a weapon, they lose their basic welfare benefits. “We are restoring law and order here in Lower Austria, it’s about protecting life and limb,” emphasized State Councilor for Asylum Christoph Luisser (FPÖ).
