The penultimate race of the CIC Swiss Bike Cup started in Basel. On the fast circuit with start and finish at the horse racing track, every position was fought for in exciting competitions. Among them were also some athletes from VeloClub Eschenbach.
Guerrini just off the podium
Marcel Guerrini had an active race in the elite men’s category. The decision in the six-man leading group was made in the sprint to the finish. Vital Albin won ahead of Filippo Colombo and Fabio Püntener. Guerrini sprinted his way to a good 4th place.
Tina Züger was at the start of the elite women’s race. She performed well, reached the finish line in 9th place and reported the following: “I was unable to maintain my position in the groups and was mostly at the back, which cost me unnecessary energy. I am satisfied with my position and performance, but I still need to work on the position battles.”
A top-class field of riders was at the start in the U23 men’s race. Among them were Pema Federer and Aaron Imhof from the TOWER SPORTS – VC ESCHENBACH team. Pema Federer got off to a good start and positioned himself around fifteenth place. Unfortunately, the Schmerkner had technical problems after 4 of 6 laps and had to end the race early. Aaron Imhof did not get off to the best start, he couldn’t get into the pedals and was far behind. In the following laps he tried his best and gained position after position. He reached the finish in 34th place.
In the U23 women’s race, Jana Glaus got off to a good start and found shelter in the large leading group. She always rode in the slipstream as hidden as possible. On the last climb, the pace was increased again and the group spread out. Glaus positioned herself well and reached the finish in a good 7th place.
In the juniors, Joé Wittenwiler and Mike Frischknecht fought for positions. Wittenwiler was involved in a fall at the start and was already lagging behind. He then put in a good race and was able to move up position by position. He reached the finish line in 41st place. Mike Frischknecht got off to a better start, but lost a few meters to the competition on the climb, which he then had to catch up with. This costs a lot of energy and towards the end of the race he was unable to close the gap and crossed the finish line in 44th place.
Sonam Federer with strong race
The younger racers started on Saturday. Sonam Federer in particular achieved a great result. The Schmerkner started cautiously in the U17 race, but was able to hold his own on the fast circuit and move up place by place. After the first lap he was already ranked around 20th. He had a very good day and was able to maintain his rhythm and continue to move up. He reached the finish in a very good 8th place. In the U15 girls, Milla Oehler achieved 21st place and in the U13 boys, Nick Sutter came 33rd.
