Christophe, a firefighter from Charleroi, was on holiday in the Camargue at the beginning of August. While he was returning from the beach, he encountered a person in distress… and saved their life. The victim’s family discovered the firefighter’s contact information through an appeal posted on social media. Here is his testimony.
“It happened on Monday, August 12, in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, in the beach parking lot.“, says Christophe, 54. This firefighter from Charleroi is vacationing in the capital of the Camargue with his family.
As he was heading back from the beach with his loved ones, he noticed a man, Xavier, vomiting near his car. We saw that something was wrong“, he recounts.
His relatives helped him into a passenger seat. I’m coming“, Christophe recalls, “and he loses consciousness“. Without hesitation, the firefighter sprang into action: “Together with my children, we got him out of the vehicle and I performed chest compressions because he was unresponsive“.
Christophe continued performing CPR for several minutes while waiting for medical assistance to arrive. We managed to revive him, but then he had a relapse. We kept going“, he remembers. Firefighters arrived shortly afterward and transported Xavier by helicopter.
“He has no after-effects”
After this incident, Christophe did not linger at the scene and left quickly, without meeting the family of the individual involved. However, a few days later, he came across a Facebook post that described an event strikingly similar to his intervention in Saintes-Maries.
Xavier’s mother-in-law, thankful for the assistance, had posted a message on the social media pages of the French firefighters, searching for a specific Belgian firefighter from Charleroi… One thing led to another, and she eventually found him. It went viral. It was shared many times.“, says Carine, the victim’s wife.
After exchanging a few messages, “We shared phone numbers and she informed me that the gentleman was doing well.“, Christophe explains. “She noted that thanks to my help, he has no lasting effects on his brain.“.
The victim’s family commends his almost heroic act. For me, it was just what I do; it’s my job.“, Christophe responds. “It makes me hope that others would also take action like this when someone is unwell.“.
“I was at the right place at the right time“, he humbly concludes.
An incredible stroke of luck
Carine, Xavier’s wife, continually expresses her gratitude to Christophe for his quick response. He was like Mr. Providence. Without him, I might have lost my husband.” she confides.
Xavier has now returned home to Loiret. Though weakened, he is calm and currently on sick leave. The circle is complete“, adds his wife, “My husband is back home, and we have found the man who saved him“.
