TUNISIAN tennis player Ons Jabeur has withdrawn from the United States (US) Open, which was due to start on Monday (26/8).

Jabeur was seeded 17th in the women’s singles draw, but withdrew due to injury. “Ons Jabeur has withdrawn from the women’s singles due to injury,” the US Open organizers wrote as quoted by BetweenFriday (23/8).

Jabeur’s place will be filled by Belgian Elise Mertens who will face Veronika Kudermetova in the opening round.

Mertens’ previous spot in the draw will be filled by a qualifier or a lucky winner. Jabeur’s withdrawal means there will be at least one lucky winner in the main draw next week.

Jabeur has struggled with injuries of late. Most recently, he withdrew from Washington and Cincinnati with a right shoulder injury.

Her only match on hardcourts this summer was a first-round loss to Naomi Osaka in Toronto.

The 29-year-old is 16-8 in his career at the US Open. In addition to the 2022 final, he reached the round of 16 at last year’s edition.

Overall, Jabeur has reached the third round of the US Open or better in each of the last five years. (Z-6)
