The 20-year-old Gauff won her first Grand Slam title at last year’s US Open. This year, she will defend her title as the reigning queen and defending champion. Gauff appeared at the press conference and spoke about her enthusiasm, as well as her opinion on the “misjudging and video review” issue that has been a hot topic on the courtside this season.
In the ATP and WTA Tour “1000” tournaments and many of the four major tournaments, the advancement of cameras (Hawk-Eye) above the court and electric line calls has made it possible to make instant and accurate decisions. However, there are many topics about how to operate them and the “human” errors that occur when there are mistakes in judging opportunities.
In fact, at the Cincinnati Open (USA/Cincinnati, hard, ATP/WTA), which is considered a warm-up for the US Open, when a player protested after the umpire’s decision, there was no video re-decision or point redo, which caused a major problem.
Gauff addressed the issue during a press conference.
“I think it should be there, especially in the Grand Slams and the 1000 tournaments. Of course, I want it to be at all levels, but I want it to be at the highest level first. The U.S. Open had it last year, but I didn’t have to use it. I hope they don’t have to use it this year. The worst thing would be to be apologized for after it’s over, and then someone would be held responsible. But I think it would reduce a lot of the frustration and abuse from players. I’m looking forward to it. I hope it continues to spread, not just to this tournament, but to all tournaments.”
“I think there’s nothing more frustrating for fans than seeing things going on and the players themselves not knowing if the player they’re rooting for is right or wrong. I hope this technology continues to grow.”
Gauff will face world No. 66 Valentina Grasheva (France) in the first round of the tournament.
