The Archdiocese of America has decided to proceed with the establishment of a Relief Fund for the fire victims of Greece with the aim of supporting the regions of Attica that were affected by the devastating fires at the beginning of August. Philoptochos Adelfotis Kyrion also participates in this initiative, which has already approved a donation of 50,000 dollars.
Announcing the establishment of the Fund, the Archbishop of America, Mr. Elpidophoros, stated: “Once again, we call on our faithful to help in the relief of our brothers in Greece. Our Archdiocese will finance the restoration of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Axion Esti, so that it can continue its spiritual offering”.
A delegation of the Archdiocese will travel to Greece and meet with the Archbishop of Athens, Mr. Ieronymos, in order to be informed about the extent of the disaster in the area of his jurisdiction, to prioritize the needs, to identify sources of funding and to organize a complete support plan. He will also visit the Holy Monastery of Panagia Axion Esti in Varnava Attica, which was damaged. This Monastery is important for the Archdiocese of Athens because of its historical importance and the precious relics it houses.
The Holy Archdiocese of America had also previously mobilized for the devastating fires of 2021 in Evia, raising money at a pan-American level. The 2021 campaign had managed to raise more than 1.1 million dollars, which was distributed directly to those affected and to health facilities.
The delegation of the Archdiocese will consist of His Eminence Bishop of Nazianzus, Mr. Athenagoras, Chief Secretary of the Holy Provincial Synod, Elaine Allen, Treasurer of the Archdiocese, and Mrs. Anita Kartalopoulou, First Vice President of the National Philoptochos.
