The Alpine stable confirmed today that its colors will be defended by newcomer Jack Doohan in the next F1 season.
The Alpine team confirmed today that Jack Doohan will ride alongside Pierre Gasly next year. It’s no surprise as Doohan’s involvement has been the subject of recent speculation.
“I am very grateful for the trust and belief from the team’s senior management,” said Doohan. “I have a lot of work ahead of me to be ready. Until then, I will do my best to absorb as much information and knowledge as possible and be ready for this step.”
“It is extremely satisfying to be the first Alpine Academy graduate to sit in the team’s race seat. I am extremely grateful to those who have supported me on this journey to make this a reality.”
“We are very pleased to promote Jack to the race seat from next season and give him the opportunity to show his skills and talent in Formula 1,” said new Alpine boss Oliver Oakes.
“I personally worked with Jack already in 2019 and I am fully aware of his pure talent and potential. He is very hardworking behind the scenes and his commitment is extremely appreciated by the entire team.”
“Together with Pierre, we have a well-balanced riding line-up with a good combination of youthful energy, experience and sheer speed. We look forward to working with both Jack and Pierre to continue to develop the car and take the team to the next level.”
Up to three Australians and five newcomers
So we could have up to three Australian drivers on the starting grid next year – if Daniel Ricciardo also stays.
Twenty-one-year-old Doohan became the Formula 3 champion in 2021. He then competed in F2, where he finished third last year. Already in 2022, he took part in the first training sessions with Alpine, which he continued last year and this year as well. In addition to training, he also tested with older cars, so he should be ready to enter F1. He was also a member of Red Bull’s junior program in the past. He has been a member of the Alpine program since 2021.
In addition to Doohan, we will also see Oliver Bearman on the starting grid next year, who although he drove one race this year, he can still be considered a rookie. Andrea Kimi Antonelli could be confirmed for Mercedes in as little as a week at Monza, and according to Helmut Mark, Liam Lawson will also be on the grid. If confirmed, we would have up to five newcomers, which is a fifth of the starting field.
