Spanish police have dismantled a criminal organisation dedicated to introducing cocaine into Spain hidden among boxes of pineapples, in a joint operation with the Portuguese Police in which three people have been arrested.
The drug was introduced in commercial containers from South America through Portuguese ports and then distributed by road to various points in Spain, the police said in a statement.
The investigation began last May, when agents detected the arrival at the Portuguese port of Setúbal of a container from Costa Rica with fruit imported by a company based in Barcelona, which could conceal a shipment of cocaine among the legal merchandise.
A joint operation was launched between the Portuguese and Spanish authorities to monitor the arrival of the container at its destination, as well as its transport by road to Barcelona.
Once there, the agents observed two people who, in addition to carrying out counter-surveillance tasks, approached the dock when the unloading of the legal merchandise began.
Investigators located 589 rectangular packages of cocaine (211 kilos) inside the container, which were hidden in a false floor of the boxes with pineapples located on several of the pallets, and arrested the two people involved, as well as the alleged final recipient of the merchandise.
