“If all goes well, in a few years hundreds of people will have Neuralink, in 5 years maybe tens of thousands, in 10 years millions,” Musk wrote on X, commenting on the latest developments in the case of the second patient who received the brain chip.
Musk founded Neuralink, a startup in July 2016, which is developing chips that can be implanted in the human brain. The billionaire believes such devices will enable humans to become “robots” capable of resisting artificial intelligence, and will help people learn to control computers using the power of thought.
On Jan. 28, Neuralink implanted the first chip in a human brain, enabling a paralyzed person to control a computer. In August, Musk announced the successful implantation of a second Neuralink chip in the brain of a patient. Neuralink said in a statement Wednesday that the surgery “went well,” with the patient, named Alex, released from the hospital the next day and his recovery smooth.
The company added that thanks to the Link device, Alex was able to improve his ability to play video games and began learning how to use computer-aided design software to design 3D models.
Musk previously expressed his belief that people will replace smartphones in the future with brain implants for communication.
