This spring, Moscow renewed its attacks on Ukrainian power plants and caused a lot of damage to the country’s production capacity, so that by the end of July there were serious power outages in the country.
Repairs to some power plants and cooler temperatures helped improve the country’s energy situation, officials said, but the heat wave has since returned.
“Electricity consumption continues to grow,” Ukrenergo reported on the Telegram platform, adding that this increase in consumption is related to “a heat wave that has spread to many areas of Ukraine.”
“Due to the increasing capacity deficit in the electricity system today from 17:00 to 21:00 consumption restrictions will apply,” the company said in a statement.
The operator added that the restrictions will not apply to critical infrastructure and some companies.
Ukraine imports electricity from neighboring EU countries to make up for the deficit in electricity production caused by Russian attacks.
At the end of last month, Prime Minister Denys Šmyhalis stated that the situation in the energy sector had “stabilized” because the repair works of two nuclear power units were completed earlier than planned and the air temperature decreased.
According to the Prime Minister, Ukraine continues to “prepare for the autumn and winter period and develop alternative sources of production”.
