Lazenby had a difficult position, it was the first film in which previous Bond Sean Connery was absent, which was also reflected in the joke in the film itself. When the girl ran away from James, Lazenby said, “This never happened to the other one.”
No other Lazenby role has surpassed that of Bond, despite the fact that he filmed dozens of them. At the same time, the film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is considered by many to be one of the best of the Bond series. The actor did not accept the offer for the next six. Only this year, at the age of 84, the actor announced the end of his career.
“It was not an easy decision, but it is time to retire. Therefore, from today I will no longer play, appear in society, give any more interviews or sign autographs. It’s been a fun ride, but getting old isn’t fun,” he said on social media at the end of July, adding that he will now spend more time with his family. He added thanks to the fans and also to his last agent.
In 2020, in an interview with the Daily Star, he said that he slept with five girls a day during the making of the famous film. “I had sex sometimes five times a day. It was outrageous. But it didn’t happen on the set because there were only eight girls there for the entire nine months. It was challenging in those days,” he said.
In 2022, he received a lot of criticism for also telling love stories and allegedly making homophobic innuendos at The Music of James Bond event in Perth. He apologized for his performance. “I just wanted to share my stories and maybe entertain someone with them. Personally, I have friends around me who are gay, and I never wanted to offend anyone. I have also been surrounded by strong women all my life and I have always admired and respected women and their wishes,” he stated, among other things.
In November, Lazenby fell at home, injured his head and had to be hospitalized.
While in 2020 he still rode a bicycle around Santa Monica with a mask over his mouth, he now uses a walker to help him walk.
