Israeli film festival canceled in India after protests

The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) has canceled an Israeli film festival in the country following protests by people from various walks of life including actors, civil society activists and academics in India.

Organized by the National Film Development Corporation, the festival was scheduled to be held at the National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) in Mumbai on Wednesday and Thursday but had to be canceled due to protests.

Former member of the lower house of the Indian Parliament i.e. the Lok Sabha and leader of the Communist Party of India, Shubhshani Ali said in a message on X that ‘We have confirmed the news that (NMIC) on August 21 and 22. has canceled the Israel Film Festival to be held in Mumbai.

He said that more than 1,000 people opposed the organization of such a fair through a signature campaign.

A petition calling for the cancellation of screenings of Israeli films says the festival is being held ‘shamefully’ at a time when the world is witnessing Israeli war crimes and genocide in Gaza and throughout Palestine. There is a witness.

Among the personalities who opposed the screening of Israeli films are Bollywood industry big name Naseeruddin Shah, documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan and Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson writer Tushar Arun Gandhi.

Campaigners to block the screening of Israeli films said that 8 percent of Gaza’s population had been killed in the recent Israeli offensive. “The management of NFDC and NMIC should be aware of the fact that the Government of India has consistently voted in favor of ceasefire.”

Mithi Borwala said that among the signatories of the petition were leaders of social movements, writers, artists and intellectuals.
