The NGO Foro Penal reported on Saturday that it has recorded 1,416 “verified and identified” arrests since July 29, the day after the Venezuelan presidential elections in which the opposition denounces alleged fraud that led to the proclamation of President-elect Nicolás Maduro.
Among those arrested are also 126 teenagers – aged between 14 and 17 –, 14 indigenous people, 17 people with disabilities and 188 women according to the agency’s classification, which highlights that the balance includes arrests recorded in the context of the “repression of protests in the post-electoral context” from July 29 to August 10.
By region, the Capital District has the highest number of arrests, with 241; followed by Carabobo, with 194, and Anzoátegui, with 113. Aragua (107), Miranda (88), Barinas (72), Lara (76) and Nueva Esparta and Zulia (67) are behind.
“We continue to receive, verify and process complaints,” said the organization’s vice president, Gonzalo Himiob, on his account on the social network X.
The National Electoral Council (CNE) announced Maduro’s victory with 51.95 percent of the votes compared to 43.18 percent obtained by González’s candidacy.
Once the first results were known on Monday, the opposition quickly came forward to claim victory – which they claim they achieved with more than 70 percent of the votes – and demand an internationally supported recount of the votes. Maduro himself confirmed that 2,000 people had been arrested.
