The venerable MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies still has so many fans that even a popular private server had to struggle over the weekend due to the high number of players.
What happened where over the weekend? Star Wars Galaxies Legends is not the only private server for the Star Wars MMORPG, which was discontinued in December 2011, but it is certainly one of the largest and most well-known. This server reached an impressive milestone a few days ago.
Since August 17, 2024, the Omega server of SWG Legends has been running longer than the official live servers of Sony Online Entertainment (SOE for short) were online. This was celebrated with the weekend event “SOEclipse”, which included the Battle of Restuss, gifts, competitions, an in-game party and numerous in-game bonuses for experience and much more.
In December 2011, SWG had to make way for the new MMORPG Star Wars – The Old Republic – here is a trailer for the newer online role-playing game for the popular sci-fi franchise:
More players than ever before
How was the event received? Bree Royce von massivelyop.com was there and wrote in a report:
With rewards like that, I expected a lot of people to be online, but nothing prepared me for the reality, as just half an hour before the event, hundreds of people had gathered at the Legends Cantina in Cloud City on Bespin, and the number of players had already surpassed the COVID-era peak.
I couldn’t even get any of my toons into the Cloud City zone because it got crowded so quickly, and the developers started redirecting players to the other capital cities (Mos Eisley, Theed, and Coronet) to spread the load.

Bree also reported that in 21 years she has never seen so many people in Star Wars Galaxies (including the official version) as she has now at this event. At times almost 3,000 characters were logged on to the private server to secure the gifts. A record for SWG Legends. And too many for the servers, which were working at their limits and even went offline at times.
Later, one of the community representatives explained on the private server’s official Discord channel that the previous record for event participants was 295. This time, the peak was said to have been 1,797 simultaneously active accounts (plus numerous secondary characters).
Not bad at all for a private server for a 21-year-old MMORPG, right?! If you’ve played SWG somewhere recently, feel free to share your experiences in the comments! Incidentally, another private server for SWG was also able to achieve high player numbers some time ago: Star Wars Galaxies Restoration wants support from Disney, player numbers speak for themselves
