The assassination attempt on Donald Trump and Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race had almost sent him into oblivion. But Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is once again attracting the attention of American voters through a series of incidents that do not increase his chances of winning the race.
The nephew of the assassinated president—whose father was also killed during the 1968 campaign—is still running as an independent, posing a potential threat to Republicans and Democrats, who fear he will siphon votes from them. Having failed to qualify for the presidential debate on CNN at the end of June, he has plunged in the polls. According to the RealClearPolitics website, he now garners an average of 5% of voting intentions, compared to 45% for Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. A steep drop from the 20% he was credited with in the fall of 2023.
