Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo de León met this Friday, August 16, with his Paraguayan counterpart, Santiago Peña, and with the Minister of Economy of Ukraine, Yulia Svyrydenko, prior to the inauguration of Luis Abinader for a second term in the Dominican Republic.

Arévalo, who arrived in the Dominican Republic last Thursday, began his day with a bilateral meeting with Peña where they “recognized the bond of friendship between both nations” and discussed issues of “trade cooperation and democratic challenges in Latin America,” reported the Guatemalan presidential spokesperson.

In addition, the Guatemalan president held a meeting with Svyrydenko, who, through his social networks, thanked Arévalo for his nation’s support during the invasion and assured that they agreed to continue working for the possible signing of a Free Trade Agreement between both nations.

The meetings took place prior to the inauguration of Luis Abinader, for his second and final presidential term, which took place at the National Theater of Santo Domingo.

Arévalo was part of the ten heads of state present in the Caribbean nation, including Spain’s Felipe VI, and the presidents of Panama, José Raúl Mulino; Paraguay’s Santiago Peña; Uruguay’s Luis Lacalle Pou; Honduras’ Xiomara Castro; and Suriname’s Chandrikapersad Santokhi, as well as the vice president of El Salvador, Félix Ulloa.

During his visit, Arévalo thanked the Dominican Government for its support before the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2023, when the Guatemalan Prosecutor’s Office tried to annul his electoral victory and his subsequent inauguration that took place on January 14.
