Marches and protest events were planned for today Friday (16/8) in West Bengal, the state where the crime took place, while protest events will also take place over the weekend.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of women across India took part in Wednesday’s marches. “Independence and life with freedom, without fear”, was one of the main demands.
The protests were peaceful, the BBC notes, but a small group of unidentified men broke into the hospital where the victim worked, in Kolkata, and damaged the emergency rooms. According to information, doctors and hospital staff were injured during the incidents, while the police made 19 arrests.
What is happening at this hour in #Kolkata is absolutely Insane. The emergency room at #RGKarCollege where the rape and murder took place has been destroyed by a violent mob. Multiple doctors I’ve spoken to say “the police did nothing to help us” . Breaking @themojostory pic.twitter.com/ToLfvBS94c
