SSH calls for increased altruistic blood donation
  • So far this year, 104 voluntary donations have been recorded

The Hidalgo Health Secretariat (SSH) and the Hidalgo State Blood Transfusion Center (CETS) call on the population to donate blood voluntarily to encourage more people to do so, since altruistic donation allows for a sufficient and safe supply system.

From January to July 2024, 104 blood donations have been recorded, which represents a significant decrease compared to the 147 received in the same period in 2023, and the 174 donations collected during 2022.

This downward trend is worrying, since, in general, the population only donates blood as a replacement, that is, to meet the requirement when they have a family member who will undergo surgery.

This means that, of the total volume of units collected annually, only a minimal percentage corresponds to voluntary donations.

Blood and its components (plasma and platelets) are essential to increase the life expectancy and quality of life of people suffering from diseases such as severe anemia or cancer.

They also allow complex medical and surgical procedures to be carried out in emergency situations. A single donation can save the lives of up to three people facing critical health situations.

CETS provides services to all hospitals in the State, which is why it is important to have voluntary donations that help meet the demand of the public sector and, above all, to have coverage for the different blood types.

Donating blood is a safe and fast act that has a profound impact on the lives of those who need it most. Thanks to the donor selection filters, guidelines and processes that are developed, the State Blood Transfusion Center guarantees the quality and safety of the blood fluid and its components.
