After Algeria’s superiority, a campaign in Morocco calls on sports officials to leave

Activists described the officials who failed to achieve any accomplishment in the last Olympic Games as “old-timers,” holding them responsible for the failure of Moroccan sports.

The hashtag “Dismissal of university presidents is a popular demand” topped social media pages, accompanied by pictures of the presidents of the concerned sports universities, who were harshly criticized by activists participating in this campaign due to poor management, especially after Morocco left with only two medals from the last Olympic Games despite the participation of Moroccan athletes in many Olympic competitions.

Especially since neighboring Algeria won two gold medals in addition to one bronze, sharing first place in Africa with Egypt, second in the Arab world, and 39th in the world.

While Morocco was satisfied with the fifth place in the Arab world and the 60th place in the world with one gold medal and one bronze medal.

One of the campaign participants described university presidents in a post on the “X” platform as “dinosaurs,” referring to the long years they have spent in their positions, calling on them to resign: “Leave your seats to young people with a high degree of patriotism and competence to create new glory for Morocco. We are tired of your faces and your repeated and shameful failure.”

Another participant wrote a tweet saying, “In Morocco, there are 56 sports federations, some of which are concerned with sports that I have never seen in my life (badminton, cricket, ice hockey), and they include an army of employees, regional directors, and regional presidents… with fat salaries and huge compensations in exchange for a complete lack of results and great neglect of athletes.”

Another tweeter expressed his regret over the results of Morocco’s participation in the Olympics, stressing that it was “a negative result by all standards for Morocco in the Olympic Games, and whoever considers it positive wants to justify its failure,” adding, “If we competed strongly with Spain and France in football, why don’t we compete with them in the rest of the sports?”

In response to this digital campaign, one of the tweeters wrote, “It seems that the university presidents have not resigned, been dismissed, or held accountable. Everyone is still in their positions, hiding in their offices, waiting for the campaign to end. Some technical managers will be sacrificed, and the same rentier series will continue as in other fields.”

It is noteworthy that Morocco exited the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a bronze medal won by the Olympic football team, and a gold medal won by runner Soufiane El Bakkali, who was received yesterday, Wednesday, by King Mohammed VI at the Royal Palace in Tetouan, where he decorated him with the Order of the Throne, Commander rank.
