According to a survey by the Family Union, nearly seven in ten Belgians have difficulty paying school fees. That’s why Restos du coeur is calling for donations to buy school supplies. Once the donations are collected, the Restos du coeur will place an order through all the restos in Belgium and redistribute the supplies to families in need.
According to data collected in 2021, nearly 4% of 14-year-olds do not have access to basic school supplies. Free education has the virtue of being in the Belgian constitution (Article 24, paragraph 3), but we are still far from it in practice. In Wallonia and Brussels, free school supplies are extended from nursery to third grade of primary school from September. In this case, parents only need to bring an empty pencil case and school bag, tissues (for kindergarten) and clothing for sports activities and the swimming pool.
